Dr. Silvana Birchenough

Need to add here.A marine ecologist with over 28 years of experience assessing the impacts of human activities and environmental stressors on marine species and seabed habitats.

I am an ecologist with more than 28 years of experience. The focus of my work has been centred on understanding the potential changes resulting from human activities on marine species and habitats. I am very familiar with domestic and international legislation for the protection of these important marine resources. Over many years, I have studied ecological effects on seabed ecosystems resulting from dredging, aggregate extraction, offshore windfarms, co-location and submerged cables and oil and gas (and direct effects of decommissioning of these man-made structures). My work has also considered the potential impacts of multiple-stressors (e.g. temperature, pH changes and metals) on commercial species (e.g. lobster, cockles, scallops and Queen conch) and the likely implications for food security and societies. This work has helped to generate new science as evidence of likely future effects to inform fisheries, helping and to monitor and improve the management of these species.

"The increasing level of human activities both on land and at sea are accelerating marine biodiversity loss globally. Therefore, it is even more pressing that we can manage human activities responsibly. This work has provided me with insights into not only what these impacts entail but, more importantly, how unwanted impacts can be mitigated and preferably, nullified while at the same time positive impacts can be enhanced. “Mitigating the bad and promoting the good” has been my mission."

Committees

  • Chair of the ICES Science, Publications, and Impact Group (SIGP) 2023-2025. This role helps the ICES publication group to determine the science needs and compilation of key resolutions to support science products.
  • Chair of the ICES Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity (DEI) 2023-2025. This role works directly with the ICES Secretariat to support and assist expert groups on DEI needs.
  • International representation across expert groups (namely, Benthic Ecology, Marine Benthal and Renewable Energy Developments and Cumulative Effects Assessments) from 2000 to present.
  • Associate Editor of the ICES Journal of Marine Science (JMS) (joined in 2016 to present). I manage scientific papers across the areas of ecology, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), climate change, ocean acidification, habitats, invasive species, decommissioning of man-made structures and offshore windfarms. I am also part of the mentor-mentee programme in support of the next cohort of scientific editors.
  • Panel expert member of the Research Council of Norway (call entitled “climate and energy”) since 2023. My role was to review and advise on the next tranche of renewable energy projects with a dedicated synthesis of applied science to support industry needs.
  • Chair and co-chair of the EU Sustainable Blue Economy Partnerships (SBEP), advising on renewable energy and marine spatial planning projects since 2023. I have produced written reports, verbal presentations and direct recommendations to the EU, advisory groups and research council of France and Italy.
